1850s in football (soccer)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The following are the football (soccer) events in the decades 1850s around the world.
- 1856/57 — Some sources claim that Cambridge University A.F.C. was formed, and that it is the oldest club now playing Association football (soccer).[1] For many years after formation, the club played its own game, known as the Cambridge rules (dating from 1848), rather than Association football.
- 1857, 24 October — Sheffield F.C. is founded in Sheffield, England. The club is regarded by the FA and FIFA as the oldest club now playing football. It is the oldest documented non-university club in any code of football. Like the Cambridge team, Sheffield played its own code, the Sheffield rules, for many years.
