#3 is the third album released by British pop music act Shakespears Sister. Following the release and subsequent success of the duo's prior album Hormonally Yours, band member Marcella Detroit left the act. Thus #3 is technically a solo record by remaining member Siobhan Fahey. Although her intention was to release the album as a solo project, Fahey was pressured to release #3 as the third Shakespears Sister album by her then-record company, London Records.

Co-written by Fahey, her ex-husband David A. Stewart and members of Fahey's new backing band, #3 was produced by Fahey, Stewart, Hormonally Yours-producer Alan Moulder, Andy Wright and Flood throughout 1995, 1996 and 1997. The musical style of #3 ventured away from the polished pop of Sacred Heart and Hormonally Yours and featured a more lo-fi and rock music feel.

The album's initial single, the Beatlesque "I Can Drive", charted at number thirty on the UK singles chart and was considered a disappointment by London Records, who chose to shelve the project. Fahey, who eventually went on to record music as a solo artist, spent years attempting to retrieve the ownership rights of #3. In 2003, the label relented and Fahey independently distributed the record through her website the following year, much to the praise of fans (who had been passing around low-quality bootlegs for eight years).

Upon renewed interest in Shakespears Sister material, a CD/DVD greatest hits package was released by London Records later the same year.
