AFC Challenge Cup 2006

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AFC Challenge Cup 2006 was a football tournament held between April 1 and April 16, 2006 in Bangladesh. Sixteen teams were split into four groups, the top two in each group qualifying for the Quarter finals, and from then on a straight knockout contest. There was no qualification stage. The cup winner was Tajikistan.

Contents

The AFC divided their 45 member nations (apart from Australia) into three groups.[1]

The top 14 are classed as developed associations

The next 14 are classed as developing associations

The last 17 are classed as emerging associations, which need time to develop their football. These are the teams who will participate in the AFC Challenge Cup 2006.

Seventeen teams were selected in August, 2005 to take part. Mongolia, Laos and East Timor were selected initially to take part, but were replaced by Bangladesh and India, and the teams participating was reduced to sixteen.

The AFC decided at its annual meeting, that Bangladesh would host the opening ceremony and that Nepal would host the final unless Bangladesh makes it into the last two, in which case it would be held in Dhaka[2][3]. It was originally planned that teams in Groups A and B will play the games in Nepal and teams in Groups C and D will be held in Bangladesh, but now only Bangladesh will host the tournament due to political unrest in Nepal[4][5][6][7]. The tournament was scheduled to take place between March 26 to April 9, 2006 but was changed to avoid clashes with Bangladesh's Independence Day on March 26[8]. The two stadia that will be used during this tournament are: the Bangabandhu Stadium (holds 36,000 people) in Dhaka and the MA Aziz Stadium (holds 20,000 people) in Chittagong.

Some teams are not taking part with their 'main' national squad, as noted below:

  • India is taking their U-20 team as preparation for the AFC Youth Championship they will be hosting.
  • Kyrgyzstan is taking part with a young team, drawn mostly from the youth squad which qualified for the AFC Youth Championship 2006.[9]
