A Matter of Time was a 1976 fantasy-musical film starring Liza Minnelli and Ingrid Bergman. It was the last movie directed by Vincente Minnelli (Liza's father), and was the first movie appearance of Isabella Rossellini. It also marked the last appearance of Charles Boyer. "A Matter of Time"'s most memorable quote is taken from a scene between Bergman and Minnelli, during which Minnelli's character declares, "I want to be just like you!" and Bergman counters, "Be yourself. Be your best self. The world worships the original!"
The film concerns a meek hotel maid (Minnelli) who strikes up a friendship with a reclusive contessa, played by Bergman.
It was an immediate critical and financial flop, and was a keen disappointment for both Vincente and Liza, who hoped to create something magical together. Due to the negative publicity and reaction the film received, as well as the troubled production in general and his declining health, Vincente Minnelli retired from films after this. He publicly disowned the film.
