Gillespie was born in Clearwater, Florida. He grew up in a devout Christian family. He attended public schools though and was an active member of church in his youth. Gillespie's parents slept in separate beds throughout his childhood, eventually divorcing when he was 18.

His mother has an interest in music, and he was around it his "whole life".[1] When Gillespie was 14, he was asked to join his current band, Underoath, after former guitartist Luke Morton's father witnessed Gillespie play the drums in church. He provides vocals as well as playing the drums and is also the only member of Underoath that has appeared on all their recordings to date.

Underoath's 2004 release They're Only Chasing Safety was, for the most part, written about Gillespie's end of a four year relationship. He tells Alternative Press, "I think I would've died if we didn't write those songs. I thought I had ruined someone's life. It's hard to explain, but you can't just pretend that things are great and go on and get married."[2]

Gillespie is also actively pursuing a solo side project called The Almost, in which he plays all of the instruments, excluding bass in some songs. He uses Truth drums, pro mark sticks, and meinl cymbals.
