Alabama Stakes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alabama Stakes is an American race for thoroughbred horses open to three-year-old fillies. In its 126th renewal in 2006, the Grade I Alabama is at a distance of one and one-quarter miles on the dirt track at Saratoga Race Course and offers a purse of $600,000.
The Alabama is named in honor of William Cottrell of Mobile, Alabama. Alabama was the name settled on because Cottrell was too modest to have a race named for him personally.
Silverbulletday won it in 1999, Sky Beauty in 1993, Go For Wand in 1990, Our Mims in 1977, Desert Vixen in 1973, Shuvee in 1969, Gamely in 1967, Busanda in 1950, Top Flight in 1932, Maskette in 1909, Beldame in 1904, Miss Woodford in 1883, and Thora, daughter of the great Longfellow, in 1881.
The Alabama was not run in 1911 or 1912, nor was it run from 1893 to 1896 or 1898 to 1900.
