Senator Alan Peter Schramm Cayetano (born October 28, 1970) is a rising star among the opposition and one of the new breed of politicians in the Philippines today. It was his early awakening and experiences in politics, as well as his abiding faith in God, that have kept him going despite the recent nightmares in his political life. “Actually, I sleep more quietly now during all these crises. There’s something about surrendering everything to the Lord,” says Alan, who is a Born Again Christian.

Alan Peter Cayetano's (or Al to his friends) humility cuts through the cynicism many Filipinos feel when politicians begin talking about religion. He speaks about his faith and religious values with earnestness and with ease. "In many of our poor Filipino families struggle for freedom and the rights of man, I was able to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death," Alan said. "It is an active, tangible agent in the world. It is a source of hope. I was elected not only to be an ambassador of the Philippine government and my district but also, with great previlege, a witness for Christ."

He was Representative from Taguig-Pateros for 9 years. He had a seven-point program for his Taguig-Pateros constituency in Metro Manila. Cayetano is particularly focused on education, because he believes that while many state universities provide quality schooling, low-quality teaching in public elementary and high schools prevents poor students from stepping up. "We are not just fighting our elders, but the system itself," Cayetano observes (Asiaweek, JULY 14, 2000 VOL. 26 NO. 27). He ran for senator on the May 14, 2007 Philippine elections under the Genuine Opposition banner and won. He assumed his new office beginning June 30, 2007.[1]
