Winter made his film debut in the 1985 film Death Wish 3. His first major role as an actor was at age 22, in the cult vampire movie The Lost Boys, in 1987. Two years later, he starred with Keanu Reeves in the comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (though this was originally shot in 1987). He reprised his role in the sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey in 1991, and also provided the voice for his character in the animated television series spin-off, as did Reeves.

Winter has since acted in few films, but has worked behind the scenes in film and television since 1988, when he directed Bar-B-Que Movie, a short spoof of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Shot on Super 8, it starred American punk band Butthole Surfers and actor John Hawkes, of later Deadwood fame.[1] In 1993, he co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in the comedy Freaked (which featured a cameo appearance by Keanu Reeves), and six years later he wrote and directed Fever. Additionally, he has directed several music videos and television commercials. He also starred in the MTV show "The Idiot Box" in the early 1990s. It was recently announced he will be directing a live-action film version of the Cartoon Network series, Ben 10. He also appeared in an episode of Saul of the Mole Men.

He is married to Sonia Dawson, and they have a son named LeRoy.
