The wealthy Willart family are torn part from within once they invite Echo in.
The novel's title is meant to draw attention to effect of the self motivated, destructive passions unleashed within the family home in the course of its story.
The film and novel follow the wealthy Willart family. Berry-Berry Willart is idolized by younger brother Clinton despite Berry's hedonistic lifestyle and irresponsible ways. After their parents, Ralph and Annabel Willart take in a young Echo O'Brien, Berry is drawn to her. Berry deserts Echo when she becomes pregnant, driving the girl to suicide and destroying Clinton's view of his brother.
