Allan Beswick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Allan Beswick is a radio broadcaster currently presenting the lunchtime show on BBC Radio Manchester in Manchester.
His jobs prior to working as a broadcaster include working as a soldier,a mental health nurse, and for the Citizen's Advice Bureau. In the mid to late eighties, he worked for Lancashire station Red Rose Radio where he presented a late-night phone-in The Allan Beswick Late Night Show.
He was well-known for his uncompromising style, ability to argue his case stubbornly, and for insulting callers who he disagreed with or didn't like. He was also known for his on-air professed dislike of Liverpudlians/Scousers (he has since said it was an act and he has no problem with Merseysiders), which perversely (and probably deliberately seeing as Red Rose had a good FM signal in Liverpool), made him extremely popular with Liverpool listeners.
The IBA banned him for a month or two during this period for being too abusive to a caller. His closing comments when the show finally ended were "I always thought masturbation was a sin. It's not, it's the Independent Broadcasting Authority."
Allan enjoys telling it like it is, even if this puts him in the naughty boys corner.
He moved to BBC Radio Manchester after this where he is now presenting the lunchtime current affairs and phone-in show. many listeners complained and were unhappy that the show was moved from the 9AM-12PM to the 12PM-2PM slot although his popularity dosen't seem to have been damaged.
Allan used to present a local current affairs Television programme called Beswicks Beat.
