It is part of the Town of New Tecumseth which is part of Simcoe County. (The 1991 amalgamation of Alliston, nearby villages Beeton and Tottenham, and the Township of Tecumseth, created one legal municipality, the Town of New Tecumseth. Municipal offices for the Town are located in Alliston.) The heart of the community is divided by Highway 89. It was founded in 1847 by English immigrant William Fletcher.
Alliston is located where the corners of four of the original townships of southern Simcoe County (Adjala, Tosorontio, Essa, and Tecumseth) meet.
Earl Rowe Provincial Park is located three kilometers west of Alliston, in the amalgamated Township of Adjala-Tosorontio. It is one of the largest provincial parks in Southern Ontario.
The town grew as a commercial centre for the area farmers and was best known as a potato-growing area. It is still a major industry in the town and is celebrated by the annual Alliston Potato Festival.
Honda of Canada Manufacturing operates an auto manufacturing facility, the biggest industry in Simcoe County, located to the southeast of Alliston, along Simcoe Road 10, about a km south of Highway 89. The facility had a minor fire in the late 1990s. There are now two plants and Honda employs approximately 4,500 people. Plant 1 currently manufactures the Civic (for Canada, U.S., Brazil, & Mexico) and Acura CSX (for Canadian market only), while Plant 2 also builds Civics (sedans for Canada & U.S. only) alongside the Ridgeline pickup truck (for Canada, U.S., & Mexico) and the Acura MDX (for Canada, U.S., Mexico, and China). A third Honda plant, for the manufacture of engines, is being built and is supposed to open in 2008 and since have closed part of Tottenham Road (from Albert Street to Industrial Parkway). Plant 1's driveway has been extended from the former Tottenham Rd out to the new bypass, Simcoe Road 10, which joins up to the original Simcoe Rd 10 at Highway 89, heads south past Honda's Plant 1, curves west and links back up with Tottenham Road at Industrial Parkway. This road opened on December 27, 2006 [1]. There may be a Wal-Mart Supercenter [2] built on this road behind the Ford dealership. [3] This will be one of the several Supercenters in Canada and possibly one of the biggest.
The most famous citizen of Alliston was Sir Frederick Banting the co-discoverer of insulin. The town's only high school is named in his honour, Banting Memorial High School. Another famous resident was Theodore Loblaw of the grocery store chain.
