Amblecote

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amblecote is a suburb in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley in the West Midlands, England, just north of Stourbridge town centre, and on the western fringe of the West Midlands urban area. Located within the Amblecote suburb is the War Memorial Athletic Ground, home of Stourbridge Football Club (the Glassboys) & Stourbridge Cricket Club.

Amblecote and the neighbouring village of Wordsley were two villages in Staffordshire near the River Stour which formed the border with the county of Worcestershire. From the seventeenth century, there have been glassworks in Amblecote, and glass is still produced to this day. There has also been a hospital in the area, Corbett Hospital, for more than 100 years, although the National Health Service announced a plan several years ago to demolish the older parts of the hospital and maintain the modern buildings as a maternity centre. In 1894, under the Local Government Act 1894, the parish of Amblecote became part of Kingswinford Rural District, but became an urban district by itself in 1898. In 1966 most of it was absorbed into the municipal borough of Stourbridge in Worcestershire. In 1974, Amblecote and the rest of the Stourbridge borough became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley in the metropolitan county of the West Midlands.

Along with Stourbridge, the Amblecote area became part of the DY8 postal district.
