The American Jewish Historical Society was founded in 1892 with the mission to foster awareness and appreciation of the American Jewish heritage and to serve as a national scholarly resource for research through the collection, preservation and dissemination of materials relating to American Jewish history.

The American Jewish Historical Society is the oldest national ethnic historical organization in the United States. The Society’s library, archives, photograph, and art and artifacts collections document the American Jewish experience.

The society has administrative offices in both New York, New York, USA and in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, USA. It has served as a public educational and interpretive function by publishing a journal, a newsletter, monographs and reference works on the American Jewish experience.

  • Jewish Newsletter - Heritage, the newsletter of AJHS, appears at least twice per year and serves both as a general interest magazine and a source of information about activities and programs at AJHS.
  • Online Journals - American Jewish History, the quarterly journal remains the most respected in its field, articles centered on the American Jewish themes. Johns Hopkins University Press provides access to the journal from the year 1996 through its subscription service, Project MUSE. The Society has digitized the journal through the year 1978; free access is available through ADAJE: The American Digital Archive of the Jewish Experience.
  • Monographs and Reference Works: The Society encourages publication as well as acts as direct publisher. During the Past several years, the Society's publications in its own name have included: A Survivor's Haggadah, Beyond Words, Hoopskirts and Huppahs, America stands with Israel.
