American Scientist (ISSN 0003-0996) is an illustrated bimonthly magazine about science and technology. Each issue includes four to five feature articles written by prominent scientists and engineers. These authors review research in all fields of science from archaeology to zoology. Scientifically-trained editors edit the articles which are accompanied by photographs or charts to clarify or emphasize points made in the text.
The magazine includes a book review section, Scientists' Bookshelf, and several regular columns that cover topics in computing, engineering, public and professional issues and reflections on the history and practice of science. The Science Observer section gives the reader an insight into behind-the-scenes science, often discussing implications or angles that are not covered by mainstream science reporting. Each issue includes the work of noted cartoonists such as Sidney Harris, Benita Epstein, and Mark Heath.
American Scientist has been published since 1913 by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. The magazine has been honored with awards for editorial, design, and illustration quality. Sigma Xi's membership of distinguished scientists and engineers comprises a cadre of loyal readers, but the magazine appeals to anyone with an interest in science. The magazine is now available on newsstands around the world, as well as by individual or institutional subscription.
American Scientist Online (ISSN 1545-2786), an online service incorporating the full content of the print magazine and additional online-only features, was launched in May 2003 to extend the mission that had been served by the magazine's Web site since 1995. Full access to the site is provided without additional charge to Sigma Xi members and other individual magazine subscribers, and to institutional subscribers who arrange site licenses.
