Ammassalik

Ammassalik is one of two municipalities in East Greenland (Tunu), the other one being Illoqqortoormiut (further north). It is in the south of East Greenland, and with an area of 232,100 km², most of it on the ice sheet, it is the largest municipality of East Greenland. The population was 3,031 on 1 January 2005. Due to its size, the municipalities borders with more municipalities than any other in Greenland (10):
- Nanortalik (south)
- Narsaq (west)
- Qaqortoq (west)
- Paamiut (west)
- Maniitsoq (west)
- Sisimiut (west)
- Kangaatsiaq (west)
- Qasigiannguit (west)
- Nuuk (west)
- Illoqqortoormiut (north)
For the most part, the municipality boundaries are laid out as straight lines on the ice cap, such as the 44°W circle of longitude (the western border), and 69°N circle of latitude (the northern border). In the east, it borders on the North Atlantic Ocean and the Denmark Strait.
The town (capital) is called Tasiilaq, pop. 1,849. It is located on the island of Ammassalik Ø, which has an area of 772 km². All villages are within about 80 km of Tasiilaq:
- Ikkatteq (Ikâteq), pop. 1 (on a small island just east of Ammassalik Ø)
- Isortoq (Isertoq), pop. 120
- Kulusuk (Cape Dan), pop. 310 (on an island east of Ammassalik Ø)
- Kuummiut (Kúngmiut), pop. 392
- Qernertuarssuit, abandoned by 1 January 2005 (pop. 1 on 1 January 2004)
- Sermiligaaq (Sermiligâq), pop. 212
- Tiniteqilaaq, pop. 148
Ammassalik is also the home to the Arctic Team Challenge, an adventure race.
