The minor district (King Amphoe) was created on January 3 1977, when the three tambon Kae Dam, Nong Kung and Mittraphap were split off from Mueang Maha Sarakham district.[1] It was upgraded to a full district on January 1 1988.[2]

The district is subdivided into 5 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 89 villages (muban). Kae Dam is a township (thesaban tambon) which covers parts of the tambon Kae Dam. There are further 5 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
