The minor district (King Amphoe) was created on April 15 1976, when the three tambon Ban Dong, Chang Nuea and Na Sak were split off from Mueang Lampang district.[1] It was upgraded to a full district on July 16 1984.[2]

The district is subdivided into 5 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 37 villages (muban). There are no municipal (thesaban) areas, and 5 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
