The minor district (King Amphoe) was created on March 1 1974, when the three tambon Nong Ki, Yoei Prasat and Mueang Phai were split off from Nang Rong district.[1] It was upgraded to a full district on April 12 1977.[2]

The district is subdivided into 10 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 123 villages (muban). Nong Ki is a township (thesaban tambon) which covers parts of tambon Nong Ki, Thung Kratat Phatthana and Thung Kraten. There are also 10 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
