Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya (Thai: พระนครศรีอยุธยา) is the capital district (Amphoe Mueang) of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, central Thailand.

In the past, the district was called Rop Krung, created in 1897. The district name was changed to Krung Kao in 1932. Later the name was changed to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya - unlike all other provinces the capital district was not named Amphoe Mueang to commemorate to the old capital city of the Ayutthaya kingdom.

Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Bang Pahan, Nakhon Luang, Uthai, Bang Pa-in, Bang Sai and Bang Ban.

The district is subdivided into 21 communes (tambon). Additional to the city (thesaban nakhon) of Ayutthaya there are two further municipal areas. Bang Sai is a township (thesaban tambon) and covers parts of the tambon Ban Ko, and Ayotya is a town (thesaban mueang) which covers part of the tambon Phai Ling, Hantra and Khlong Suan Phlu.
