The district was created in 1991, when it was split off from Amphoe Nakhon Chai Si.
The most important building in the district is the Phutthamonthon park, a 40 ha buddhist park. The district was named after the park.
Also one of three campus of the Mahidol University is located in Salaya.
The district is subdivided into 3 communes (tambon), which are further subdivided into 18 villages (muban). Sala Ya has township (thesaban tambon) status and covers parts of the tambon Sala Ya. Each of the tambon is administrated by a tambon administrative organization (TAO).
