Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Mueang Sisaket, Phayu, Phrai Bueng, Khukhan, Prang Ku and Uthumphon Phisai.

The minor district (King Amphoe) was created on March 9 1987, when the five tambon Bu Sung, That, Duan Yai, Bo Kaeo and Si Samran were split off from Mueang Sisaket district.[1] It was upgraded to a full district on October 20 1993.[2]

The district is subdivided into 8 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 126 villages (muban). There are no municipal (thesaban) areas, and 8 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
