Anglican Diocese of Calgary

The Anglican Diocese of Calgary is a diocese of the Anglican Church of Canada which is situated in the southern part of the civil province of Alberta. The diocesan boundaries are: on the south, the border between Alberta and the United States; on the east, the Alberta-Saskatchewan border; on the west, the Alberta-British Columbia border and on the north, an uneven east-west line drawn across the province just north of Lacombe forms the northern boundary of the Diocese of Calgary and the southern boundary of the Diocese of Edmonton. This area of about 82,0000 square miles includes regions of mountain, foothills, parkland and prairie. The see city is Calgary. Other cities in the diocese are Red Deer, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. There are about 20,000 Anglicans and 92 parishes in the diocese.

The Diocese of Calgary was established in 1882 as part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Rupert's Land . The first Bishop was the Right Reverend Cyprian Pinkham, who remained in this office until about 1922. Other bishops include Bishop Sherman, the Rt. Rev. Morse Goodman, the Most Rev. Barry Curtis (He was also the metropolitan archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Rupert's Land, hence the honorific "the Most Reverend".) Archbishop Curtis was the 6th Bishop of Calgary. The 7th Bishop was the Rt. Rev. Barry Hollowell (Elected November 5, 1999; Retired August 31, 2005).

The 8th Bishop of Calgary is the Rt. Rev. Derek B.E. Hoskin. He was elected June 24, 2006. He was consecrated (ordained a bishop) and enthroned (or installed as the bishop of the Diocese of Calgary) at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary on Michaelmas, September 29, 2006.
