Annandale's diverse student body, challenging courses, outstanding activities program, and positive professional staff provide ample opportunities for every student to succeed.
There are eight active honor societies, as well as numerous academically oriented clubs. The school offers a full range of athletic opportunities for males and females, and outstanding athletic achievements include numerous state championships and Coach of the Year awards. Annandale High also excels in the arts; its band has been recognized as a Virginia Honor Band, and it is proud of a top-rated orchestra and choral program which have earned the music department Blue Ribbon status from the Virginia State Music Educators. Annandale's outstanding theater program has trained students to take on lead roles in college productions all over the country. Award-winning student art work and photography are on display in museums and public buildings throughout the area.
The school is supported by an active Parent-Student-Teacher Association that fosters parent involvement in the educational process. The school also receives strong support from the community surrounding it, including local businesses and community organizations. Annandale offers a fully staffed college and career center, open to students and parents; houses adult education classes; and encourages community use of its facilities.
AHS also has the following FCPS Programs:
- Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
- Early Identification Program (EIP)
- English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP)
- International Baccalaureate Program (IB)

Some critics among the students and parents of Annandale students disagree with the school's lax policies toward advancing all students to their fullest potential. With the AVID and IB programs, smarter students are put into advanced classes whereas other students are in normal classes to which the No Child Left Behind Act is more prevalent. Annandale High School has also been criticized for changing to the IB program in recent years because of its lack of college recognition.

In 2006-2007, Annandale's student body was 34% White; 17% Black; 28% Hispanic, and 21% Asian.
The school was all-white segregated institution when it was founded in 1954, but by the late 90's the proportion of white students was only 44% and there were students from 73 countries, speaking 43 different languages.[1] For this reason, it was visited in 1998 by President Bill Clinton's President’s Advisory Board on Race for round-table discussions[2]. As of 2006, 87 nationalities and 46 languages are represented in the student population. A Gay-straight alliance club is present at Annandale and incidents of intolerance are low. Many groups have strong club activities such as the Latino, western African, and Jewish culture groups.
In December 2006 Shawn A. Hearn, formerly assistant principal at Annandale High School and then working as principal for Eastern Senior High School, was fired after he was arrested for assaulting students in four separate incidents. He is being sued in civil court for $500,000 for attacking his students.[3]
The football program at Annandale is one of pride and joys of the Annandale community. In 50 years, Annandale has won six football state championships (1965, 1967, 1972, 1978, 1993, and 1994) and the Patriot District Champion title.[4] Recently, Annandale has won Patriot District titles in both 2005 and 2006, however, both times the Atoms fell to their first round opponents.
