Appendix Probi

The Appendix Probi is a third century text by Valerio Probo which lists frequent tendencies in the grammar and pronunciation of a contemporary Romance vernacular, which are seen by the author as incorrect Latin. The author's corrections of these tendencies give us insight into how Latin had evolved by that time. For example, the instruction ALVEUS NON ALBEUS tells the reader that the Classical Latin word is written with a V and not a B. The fact that this was a common spelling error tells us that V had undergone occlusion when preceded by a liquid consonant. Cf. French corbeau < CORVU.
