Arroz con leche

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arroz con leche, or "rice with milk" in English, is a popular dessert. Many countries have their own versions. It closely resembles rice pudding. Arroz con leche is made of rice and milk, sweetened and boiled down until the rice is tender and the milk is thick. It is usually served with a sprinkling of cinnamon on top, and is best eaten hot and fresh. Another variation to make Arroz con leche is to boil the rice in cinnamon water and then add sweetened condensed milk to the cooked rice. Raisins can be added.

Arroz con leche is one of many foods sold by vendors who walk the streets daily. It is produced in homes by families, and in many cases forms the basis of the family's livelihood. The dessert forms the basis for a popular variety of paleta, a frozen dessert bar.

Arroz con leche is also a children's song and dance;

Arroz con leche,

me quiero casar
con una señorita de San Nicolás
que sepa coser
que sepa bordar
que sepa abrir la puerta
para ir a jugar.

Con ésta sí.
con éste no,
con esta señorita
me caso yo.

Cásate conmigo que yo te daré
zapatos y medias color café.

Rice with milk
I want to get married
with a young lady from San Nicolás
who can sew
who can do embroidery
who can open the door
to go out to play

With this one yes
With this one no
With this young lady
I will get married

Marry me that I will give you
brown shoes and socks
