Artemis Fowl I is the father of teenage prodigy Artemis Fowl II, title character of Eoin Colfer's fictional series.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Both Fowls are descended from a long line of lawless Irish billionaires. Artemis I attempted to 'go legit' by investing some of the family fortune into post-communist Russian shipping endeavors, with disastrous results. Fowl Senior was gravely injured and missing for over a year following an attack by the Russian Mafiya aboard the Fowl Star. He was accompanied by his bodyguard, "the Major" (an uncle of Butler), who was killed in the attack. It consisted of a stolen Stinger missile striking the ship. Due to the fact that the ship was carrying a quarter of a million cans of cola, there was quite an explosion. In this accident and in the subsequent events in the hands of the Mafiya, Artemis the First loses a leg and is blinded in one eye. He was rescued by his son Artemis II in Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident with the help of Butler, Commander Julius Root, and Captain Holly Short.

Holly Short healed most of his fairly generic wounds and restored his sight to him, although his leg could not be reattached, even had they had it. Afterwards he no longer wanted to be a criminal. Previous to the infusion of magic, Artemis Fowl Senior was constantly quoting the family motto (Aurum Potestas Est - gold is power) to his son. However, as he was recovering in a hospital in Helsinki, he spoke of subjects such as heroism and the futility of gold accumulation.

"Gold is not all-important, Arty. We have everything we need, right here, the three of us..." - Referring to himself, Angeline Fowl and Artemis Junior (Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code).

When Artemis Junior vanishes for three years in Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony, Domovoi Butler is forced to inform Artemis Senior and his wife Angeline of the existence of fairies. They refuse to believe it, however, and consider it symptoms of madness, brought on by guilt.

Also in those three years, Artemis Senior and his wife Angeline have had twins.
