Asaba, Nigeria

Asaba is the administrative capital of Nigeria's Delta State. The city is comprised mainly of the Igbo ethnic group while very large populations of Itsekiri, Urhobo,Isoko and Ijaw reside in the city. A growing Hausa and Yoruba communities also reside in the city. The Igbo speaking parts of Delta state feel marginalised by the state's political structure. Thus are considering a separate state called "Anioma". The population of Asaba is about 2 million. (2005 Est.) Native Asaba people are historically known to be very humble and accommodating of travellers and strangers. Little wonder why Asaba remains about the safest and most peaceful city in Nigeria. Asaba was once the colonial capital of the Southern Protectorate of Nigeria. It hosted the Royal Niger Company, which the British authorities set up to stimulate trade and the exportation of goods to England. That company has grown today into a large company known as the UAC Nigeria PLC.
Asaba's people speak a unique dialect of Igbo language. Asaba itself was founded by Prince Nnebisi, the child of an Igala prince and an Ibo mother.
Asaba is ruled by the Asagba, Obi Joseph Chike Edozien.
Famous Asaba residents include or have included Chief Dennis Osadebay, the former Premier of Mid-Western region, Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu, Chief Sunny Odogwu, the late Chief Sunday Nezianya, Prince Charles Jiduwah, and Chief B.O.I. Ogbolumani who is the Onihe of Asaba.
