Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) is a coeducational public university located in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. It is the metropolitan campus of Auburn University and was established by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1967. AUM offers programs of study leading to bachelor's, master's, and specialist degrees in business, education, liberal arts, nursing, and science. In addition, AUM offers doctorates in the three programs in conjunction with Auburn University. The university enrolls approximately 5,000 students, with an additional 10,000 enrolled in continuing education programs. In January 2007, the university moved toward branding itself as "Auburn Montgomery."

AUM originated from an extension center operated by the University of Alabama. The extension center was located on Bell Street between downtown Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base and began offering classes in 1936. In the mid-1960s, Montgomery civic leaders began making plans to convert the extension into a full four year degree-granting university. The University of Alabama expressed little desire to add another university to the University of Alabama System; therefore, Auburn University purchased the property from the University of Alabama and began operating AUM as a part of Auburn University.
AUM was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. In March of 1968, Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk, Jr. was appointed vice president and chief administrator of the newly created university. Classes officially began in the fall of 1969 but remained at the Bell Street location until construction of the new campus was completed. In the fall of 1971, AUM moved into its new 500 acre campus located seven miles east of downtown Montgomery. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an operationally separate institution in 1973. Accreditation was reaffirmed in 1978, 1988, and 1998.
In January of 2007, AUM’s 40th anniversary, the university began branding itself as Auburn Montgomery and unveiled a new logo. The redesigned logo incorporates the AUM library tower in a style resembling Auburn University’s logo which features the Samford Hall clock tower. While the university’s official name will remain the same, the rebranding aims to increase cooperation between the institutions.
For the 2006-2007 academic year, AUM enrolled 4,300 undergraduate and 779 postgraduate students. The student body is 63% female and 37% male. In terms of racial makeup, 61% of students are White, 32% are Black, 2% are Asian, 2% are Hispanic, with 3% unreported. AUM currently employs 318 faculty members, making the student/faculty ratio 16:1.
AUM is comprised of five schools and colleges (Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science) that offer bachelor, master, and specialist degree programs. The most popular bachelor degrees granted are business (35%), education (15%), health professions and related sciences (13%), and biology (7%). AUM also offers a joint doctorate program with Auburn University in Audiology, Education, and Public Administration.
AUM also features a strong continuing education program that enrolls over 10,000 students annually. Continuing Education curriculums include certificate programs, corporate education, community education, computer training, languages, online training, and youth programs.
Since its beginning as an extension campus, AUM has traditionally been a commuter campus. Eight years after moving to its current location, dormitories were constructed.
AUM offers apartment style dormitories in one, two, or four bedroom floor plans. Housing is divided into two sections, West Courtyards and North Commons. The West Courtyards dormitories were opened in the fall of 1979 and are made up of seven two-story buildings (labeled A, B, C, D, E, F, and G).[3] In 2003 the eight-story North Commons complex, featuring private bedrooms, was opened.[4] During the regular school year, approximately 10% to 15% of AUM students live on campus.
AUM has been known for its achievements on the field of play in the NAIA since the inception of the athletic department 30 years ago. Currently AUM participates in the following sports Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Tennis, and Baseball. In the Spring of 2009 AUM will begin their inaugural season of Softball.
