Auchentoshan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Auchentoshan is a triple-distilled, single malt, lowland Scotch whisky. Billed as "the world’s No. 1 best selling lowland single malt," Auchentoshan is distilled by Morrison Bowmore Distillers, Limited and is available in Select, 10 year, and 21 year varieties.

Auchentoshan is one of the few remaining Lowland Malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. Established in 1823 the distillery lies to the North-West of Glasgow and is a short journey from the city to Loch Lomond.

Unusually for a Scottish distillery, Auchentoshan practices triple distillation. Generally the final stage of Scotch whisky production involves distilling the fermented mash in two copper stills. In Auchentoshan, a third still gives a final spirit strength of 81% ABV (162% proof). This triple distillation, complemented by unpeated malt, gives Auchentoshan a more delicate flavour than many Scotch Whiskies. Maturation is in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry butts.

Special bottlings are released periodically, including the oldest, a 41 year old Auchentoshan distilled in 1962 and released in 2003.

The distillery has a visitor centre and conference facilities, both completed in 2005, and is open to the public for tours.
