The Audited Bureau of Circulations is normally known as "ABC". It was founded on 14 October 1931, initially by ISBA (Society of British Advertisers) to provide an independent verification of circulation / data figures to facilitate the buying and selling of advertising space within UK National newspapers. Due to the phenomenal success, the (IPA), PPA, NS and NPA (Newspaper Publishers' Association) became involved and ABC has developed into the organisation it is today, providing independent verification of data for print, lists/databases and exhibitions.

ABC is a non-profit organisation governed by a council of permanent and elected representatives from advertisers, advertising agencies, media owners and their representative trade bodies. It is a leading member of the International Federation of ABC's.

ABC ELECTRONIC was established in 1996 as the new media arm of ABC. It delivers electronic media (i.e internet) audits to agreed industry standards and is growing from strength to strength with increasing subscribers and frequency of reporting for key sites. Commercial information providers continue to join the ABC ELECTRONIC Associate Subscriber scheme and work with the industry to deliver best practice analytics.
