Az Zawiyah

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Az Zawiyah (Az or Ez or Al Zawiyah or Zawiya or Zawia or Zauia, most commonly Az Zawiyah), (Arabic:الزاوية, transliteration:Az Zāwiyah), (sometimes called Az Zawiyah Al Gharbiyah, الزاوية الغربية ), is a city of northwestern Libya situated on the Mediterranean coast about 40 km west of Tripoli. Az Zawiyah is the capital of a Sha'biyah (municipality) with the same name (see Az Zawiyah Municipality).

In the Libyan censuses of 1973 and 1984, the city counted about 100,000, it was then and possibly it continues to be today the fourth largest city in Libya by population (after Tripoli, Benghazi and Misratah). In 2003, the Az Zawiyah Municipality was estimated to have a population of about 200,000, [1] half of which or more is concentrated in the city. There is a university named the Seventh of April University (founded in 1988). There also an oil field nearby the city and one of the two most important oil refineries in Libya. The city has one of the most famous car rubbish yard in the country known as Rubbish of Al Harsha
