From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Azariah Cutting Flagg (1790 – November 24, 1873) was a prominent politician in New York State from the 1820s through the 1850s. He was one of the four leading members of the Albany Regency.
A native of Clinton County, New York, Flagg began his political career as a state assemblyman for that county in 1823 and 1824. He was appointed to be Secretary of State of New York in 1826, then to be State Controller in 1834. His final political office was City Controller of New York City, a post he held from 1853 to 1859.
Flagg began as a member of the Democratic Party, but broke away in 1842 to join first the Barnburners, then the Free Soil Party in the late 1840s, and finally the nascent Republican Party in the mid-1850s.
