The programme launched on the 27 October 1986 together with the daytime television service on BBC One, serving as a replacement to the News at Noon programme. Martyn Lewis who had recently joined the BBC from rival ITN was the first presenter.
A new look across all of BBC News television output in 1999 meant that for the first time, the three main bulletins on BBC One had the same look with only the exception of the programme name. At this time, Anna Ford became main presenter of the bulletin until her retirement from newsreading in 2006.
A second relaunch of the theme introduced in 1999 came in 2006, when Sophie Raworth became the new main presenter. Darren Jordon presented the programme on Fridays until October 2006 to join Al-Jazeera.
Since Darren Jordon left the programme in October 2006, No one presenter has been appointed to replace him, instead Emily Maitlis and Jane Hill have been the most regular presenters. Other newsreaders have included Mishal Husain, Kate Silverton, Jon Sopel Natasha Kaplinsky and Bill Turnbull.

Since April 2005, the programme has been part of the One O'Clock Newshour on BBC News 24; between 13:00 and 13:45 on the channel, a service with in-vision British Sign Language is provided for viewers with hearing problems. The Newshour continues until 14:00.
Within the last few minutes of each programme, a full national weather forecast is presented within the studio, presented by one of a range of forecasters from BBC Weather.
A slight update to the graphics and music was introduced across all BBC News programmes (including BBC News 24 and BBC World) on 22 January 2007 to reflect the increasing number of widescreen TV viewers. The new graphics focus on a rectangular/square design.
