BBC Radio Kent
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BBC Radio Kent is the BBC Local Radio service for the English county of Kent. Launched in 1970 as BBC Radio Medway, originally serving the Medway Towns from Chatham. It gained its current name when its operations were expanded to Kent in 1983 as part of the BBC's policy of operating county-wide radio stations.
It currently broadcasts on FM on 96.7 (West Kent, Wrotham transmitter), 97.6 (Folkestone area) and 104.2 (East Kent, Swingate transmitter) also 774 (Littlebourne) and 1602 (Rusthall) MW and DAB.
Radio Medway used to be based at 30 High Street Chatham and continued there for three years after its transition to Radio Kent (A former newspaper office, 30 High Street was subsequently named Media House).
From 1986 it transferred operations to the nearby Sun Pier, from where it was able to broadcast in stereo for the first time.
In 2001 the station moved to The Great Hall, Mount Pleasant Road, Tunbridge Wells, closer to the centre of Kent, as part of a BBC initiative to increase its overall presence in the south east.
In line with most BBC Local Radio stations, Tunbridge Wells has two studios and an NPA (News Production Area). A small studio (called "the Wendy House" because of its compact size) still exists close to the former Sun Pier studios in Chatham. Additional news studios (in Canterbury at Christ Church College and at the Dover District Council offices in Whitfield) are used by district reporters, and there is also a radio car for outside broadcasts.
The station's Managing Editor is Mark Hayman.
