"Bad Day" is a pop song written by Canadian singer Daniel Powter. It was released as the first single from his debut album Daniel Powter (2005) and reached number one on the Canadian Singles Chart; it was also successful in the United Kingdom, where it reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also the number 1 song of the year on the Billboard Hot 100. Since its release, the song has sold/downloaded more than 15 million copies worldwide.[citation needed]

During the fifth season of American television singing competition show American Idol, whenever a contestant was voted off, the song was played with a video of the contestant's journey on the show. On the last performance show, Powter appeared live to sing the song. In the following season, Bad Day was replaced by Daughtry's song "Home" for the elimination song. During the 2006 NBA Playoffs, the song was played in the arena whenever the team was eliminated from the series on their home court, they too replaced "Bad Day" with Daughtry's "Home" for the following year's playoff. Other competitions where it has made appearances are the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Canadian Idol, 2006 FIFA World Cup, and So You Think You Can Dance. Popular satirical news show The Daily Show With Jon Stewart played Powter's song over a montage of terrorist-oriented tapes following the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

"Bad Day" has been certified 2x platinum by the RIAA in the U.S. for digital sales of over 2 million, and it became the second-best-selling digital single of all time.[citations needed] The song was featured as a free download on Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store during August 2August 9, 2005. It was nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance".[1]

Billboard named "Bad Day" the No. 1 Hot 100 song of 2006.[2]

"Bad Day" was used in an advert for Right Guard in the UK in 2007.

This song was covered by the Chipmunks at the beginning of the 2007 film Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The music video features two single people, a boy (Jason Adelman) and a girl (Samaire Armstrong), waking and going about their daily schedule. The video shows this happening over a three-day period, but makes no distinction between the days. The main event is the two adding graffiti to the same wall, separately, on each day, culminating in the completion of a heart. At the end of the video, life mirrors the image created on the wall, with the boy offering the soaking wet girl a red umbrella in the pouring rain, as a cab stops for them. Parts of it are shot in a splitscreen. Throughout the video, Powter is shown with his beanie hat playing his piano. The Metro Red Line subway in Los Angeles was used during the shooting of this video.
