While in Deseronto (as Quinte), the team gained infamy and a bush league reputation. Coached by David Frost, who now faces multiple charges levied by the Ontario Provincial Police in respect to the treatment of minors, the Hawks became notorious for starting brawls and a dirty brand of hockey. Led by ex-NHLer and convict Mike Danton and troubled short-time NHLer Sheldon Keefe (now the owner of the Pembroke Lumber Kings), the Hawks became powerhouses in the Metro Junior A Hockey League. Frost was fired by the team and convicted of assault after he struck one of his own players during a playoff game. The team moved to Bancroft soon after when the Metro League folded and many of its teams joined the OPJHL.

In Bancroft, the Hawks have never obtained much in the way of success. Since joining the OPJHL in 1998, the Hawks have never obtained a winning season. Since 2003-04, the Hawks have spent a lot of their time in or near the basement of the OPJHL.

The 2006-07 Season was not kind to the Hawks. Although there was some improvement on the ice, there were allegations of mismanagement and the firesaling of the team's equipment and skilled players by ownership near the end of the season. The activities of the team's management has been monitored by both the league and, at times, the local police according the Bancroft this Week. All this has led the Hawks to sit out the 2007-08 season and their ultimate future is still in question.
