The Bangkok Metropolitan Area (Thai: กรุงเทพมหานครและปริมณฑล) is the urban area of Bangkok, Thailand and its surrounding provinces. Officially, it covers an area of 7,761.50 km² and with a registered population of 10,061,726 (as of December 19, 2007) it has a population density of 1,296.36 per km². Actual numbers at any given time are 10-40% higher than registered. In practice, Eastern areas of Samut Prakan province are not really considered Greater Bangkok, nor is Nakhon Pathom or Samut Sakhon provinces, and they aren't continuously built up areas.
