It is also the third tallest building in Texas and the 20th tallest building in the United States. It is the 53rd tallest building in the world. It contains 1,900,000 square feet (177,000 ) of office space. The building was designed by JPJ Architects Inc. and HLM Design. Construction began in 1983 and finished in 1985. It has also been lovingly referred to as the "Jolly Green Giant" and the "Big Pickle."

The building's outline is accented at night by green argon lighting that runs along all of the building's edges (see picture).

The top floor functions as a communications center using the building itself as a giant super antenna. All point-to-point microwave and fixed-service antennas are concealed within a specifically designed glass communications parapet on the top floor. The base of the parapet opens to the 72nd floor below allowing for easy and safe access during installation and servicing of wireless devices. It also protects the hardware from weather. James T. Chiles designed this innovative feature.

The Communications Center is available for almost every category of radio and Wi-Fi communications systems including: 800/900 MHz, VHF/UHF, 220 MHz, 2.8 GHz and 5.8 GHz, cellular, private and common carrier microwave, governmental agencies and broadcast electronic news and information gathering. The center is maintained by Telecommunications Properties and Aspen Communications.

The development was originally called the Dallas Main Center, followed by NCNB Plaza, NationsBank Plaza, and finally Bank of America Plaza in 1998. It was the only tower built out of an original four-tower plan, one of which was a twin to the original tower that would have been illuminated with purple neon.
