Barium peroxide (BaO2) is a grey-white compound. Because barium peroxide readily absorbs water it is used as a drying agent. Barium peroxide is also an oxidizing agent which is used for bleaching. It is used in fireworks as an oxidizer[1] which also gives a vivid green colour.

Barium peroxide is a peroxide rather than a dioxide because the oxygen atoms bond to each other as well as to the barium.

Barium peroxide can be used to prepare hydrogen peroxide via the following reaction:

BaO2 + H2SO4 → H2O2 + BaSO4
