Barrett Martin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barrett Martin (born April 14th, 1967 in Olympia, Washington) was the drummer for the Seattle, Washington group the Screaming Trees as well as the supergroup Mad Season, and provided percussion on Queens of the Stone Age's Rated R (album). He studied jazz theory and classical percussion at Western Washington University in the mid-1980s. Aside from his collaboration in various side projects as a professional percussionist during and after the dissolution of the Screaming Trees, he has focused his musical endevours on the study of percussion styles from various cultures around the world, primarily on African tribal rhythms. The most early and apparent influence of tribal techniques on his style can be heard in the opening drum riff of the Screaming Trees' song, Nearly Lost You (as a side note, this riff was performed during Bill Clinton's 1992 inauguration ceremony) and "X-ray Mind" during a stint in Mad Season. As of 2004, he is pursuing a doctorate in anthropology and music at New Mexico University. He has also been a central member in the revolving-door music project Tuatara, and founded his own record label, Fast Horse Recordings. In 2004, Barrett released a solo album of modern jazz entitled The Painted Desert. His first band in Seattle was actually called N-Reactor which later became Thin Men. He left Thin Men to join Skin Yard.
