Barry Corbin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leonard Barrie "Barry" Corbin (born October 16, 1940 in Lamesa, Texas) is a U.S.-based character actor with over 100 credits in film and television and several in computer gaming. He's the son of Kilmer Blaine Corbin, a judge and Texas State Senator (1948-1956), and Alma Scott Corbin, a school teacher. Most television viewers remember him best for his portrayal of former astronaut Maurice Minnifield on Northern Exposure, for which he received an Emmy nomination. To moviegoers he's best remembered as the General in WarGames, John Travolta's uncle in Urban Cowboy, or Roscoe Brown, who was July Johnson's bumbling deputy, in the acclaimed western Lonesome Dove.

He began his career as a Shakespearean actor back in the 1960s, but today Barry is most likely to be seen in the role of the local Sheriff, military leader, or other authority figure, though on occasion, he has effectively portrayed murderous villains as well.

While many of his films have been westerns, his proficiency in the saddle is no act. Much of his spare time is spent riding on his small Texas ranch, and he has volunteered his time to charity rodeos for many years.
