Battle of Gestilren

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Gestilren took place July 17, 1210. Where this battle took place is the subject of a very long and very overheated discussion between Swedish historians. Recently, the former antiquarian and spare time historian Lars-Otto Berg have claimed that it was located at Gästre ( 59°45′N, 16°57′E) in Uppland, Sweden since he in the local church records found the farm name "Gestilren" fifteen times during the years 1580-1630. Gunnar Linde has come forward with the claim that the battle was fought in Göstrings hundred in Östergötland, and Lars Gahrn believes it was a sea-battle. The traditional location is Varv in Västergötland, where a monument was erected in 1910 to commemorate the 700 years since the battle. The battle was fought between Sverker and the Swedish king Eric. Sverker had been beaten in the previous Battle of Lena, but had returned with new forces. Sverker died during the battle. Sverker had up to 15,000 Danish and Loyalist soldiers while Eric sent 20,000 men
