Belledune, New Brunswick

Belledune is a village on Chaleur Bay in northern New Brunswick, Canada. As of 2001 the population was 1,923. Belledune includes the former village of Jacquet River, which was dissolved in a 1994 amalgamation.

The village was first settled by Francois Guitard in 1799, and settlers from the Miramichi Valley moved to Belledune after an 1824 fire.

The largest employers are an NB Power thermal electrical generating station, which opened in 1993; and a lead smelter owned by Noranda which caused some contamination and health problems in the area. A soil oxidation plant owned by Bennett Environmental is also in the process of opening in Spring 2006.
