Benedict Arnold (governor)

Benedict Arnold (21 December 1615–19 June 1678) was governor of Rhode Island.

He was governor during 1663-66, 1669-72, and 1677-78. He was born in England and in later life lived in Newport, Rhode Island.

Among many other achievements, he oversaw construction, or re-construction of Newport Tower (Rhode Island). The Newport Tower history is currently suffering under the controversy of misunderstanding. The "Tower" is the shell of a wind mill probably built in the mid 1600's by Englishmen. The history is unclear however so who built it, and when it was built may never come to light, which leaves it open to speculation. Governor Arnold was instrumental in bringing about the reconciliation and union of the two colonies of Rhode Island and Providence plantations.

His father was William Arnold, and his great-grandson was the notorious American Revolution General Benedict Arnold.
