As a boy, Speed grew up playing the cello and guitar. He graduated with a degree in Music Technology at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at Adelaide University in 2005,[citation needed] and studied Screen Composing at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney.[citation needed]
He began performing solo shows in 2001 and released two EPs under the names Mr Tappin' Fresh and The Other Half. Later, he teamed up with DJ Tr!p to form The New Pollutants, a music duo that toured major festivals around Australia including the Falls Festival and Big Day Out. In 2003 the group was voted Most Popular Dance Act by DB Magazine readers,[1] and reached #1 on 3D Radio’s Top 20 + 1 for the "Sid-Hop" single.[citation needed] In 2004, they headlined the opening of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.[citation needed] The New Pollutants released a full length album, 12" EP and 7" single. [2]
In 2005, The New Pollutants composed and performed a new soundtrack to the silent film Metropolis [3]. This project has performed at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), as a part of the 2006 Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival, at the 2006 Perth Revelations Film Festival] and 2005 Adelaide Film Festival. From the world premiere performance at the 2005 Adelaide Film Festival, the Adelaide Advertiser said: "Speed and Hopprich’s score was a gift"[4].
In 2006, Benjamin Speed relocated to Sydney and has since composed scores for short films, animations and television documentaries. He received the Best Original Score award at the 2006 St Kilda Top 100 Shorts Film Festival for the animated film Carnivore Reflux[5], a film that has also been nominated for the Australian Film Institute[6] and won at the Inside Film Awards[7]. In February 2007, Benjamin Speed's debut solo album The Dreamer was released by Creative Vibes.
