Best Of 03 was a promotional cover CD given away with issue 209 of Q magazine.

The following excerpt is the introduction from the inside of the cover sleeve.

“And so, as quickly as it came around, the good year 2003 will be bidding us adieu in a matter of weeks. So there’s no better time to take stock of what it’s brought us musically.

If there’s been one defining musical theme of the year almost gone it’s that there’s been no one defining musical theme. No big all-consuming trend, no bizarre sub-genre poking its head over the mainstream parapet, nothing. This isn’t to say that 2003 has been lacking in riches. On the contrary, what we have been blessed with are many, many fine records covering a wide sweep of sounds, styles, shapes and sizes. Which suits us just fine – Q’s world is, after all, a big broad and, oh yes, beautiful one.

Enter, then, our annual Best Of Year bonanza; the perfect way to dip your toes into the year’s musical waters. Or to lick at its aural ice cream. You get the picture. From the classic rock shapes of Kings Of Leon, The Thrills and Stereophonics to the cock rocking beats of the The Darkness, from the multi-coloured world of OutKast to the dark corners of Nick Cave’s psyche, from the calm of Elbow to the noise of The Mars Volta, these are some of the finest sounds of 2003 and of Q too.
