Krishna Bharat

Krishna Bharat is a research scientist at Google who is famous for creating Google News (http://news.google.com/). This service can automatically index about 4500 news websites around the world and provide a summary of the News resources. Officially his title is "Principal Research Scientist".

Krishna Bharat created Google News in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks to keep him abreast of the developments. Since then, it has been a huge hit and a popuplar offering from Google's services. It is interesting to note that Google News was one of Google's first endeavours beyond offering just plain text searches on its page.

Krishna was born in India, and grew up in Bangalore, then a sleepy town in South India. He received an undergraduate Engineering degree in Computer Science from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He subsequently received a Ph.D from Georgia Tech on Human Computer Interaction. His work on the Hilltop algorithm earned him a joint patent with Google. Hilltop is a critical piece in the way Google Searches works[citation needed]. His research work in the search engine space is highly acclaimed and he is a well respected authority in this arena.

Krishna's efforts in creating Google News are also mentioned in the book The Google Story which many view as the most comprehensive book about Google. He comes from a family of eminent iyengars that include Dr. Rangaswamy Srinivasan, Dr. S. Rangachari, Dr. S. Rajappa, Rangaswamy Aravamudhan, Ravi Parthasarathy, P. Ragunathan and Shri Narasimha Iyengar, just to name a few.
