The Bhatias are Bhati (or Bhatti) Rajputs (or warriors) originated from the Jaisalmer area of Rajasthan. Due to continuous war with the Mughals and severe drought in the region, almost all the Bhatias emigrated with their animals and families settling down in places such as Kutch, Hyderabad, Thatta, Nasarpur etc. Bhatias started adopting the local language and culture and were in the long run identified as Kutchi Bhatias, Punjabi Bhatias etc. Some Bhatias migrated from Lailpur (now known as Faislabad) Pakistan were having 'CHAKS' there.

In 1947, with the onset of Partition, numerous Bhatias were forced to leave the newly formed Islamic Republic of Pakistan and settle down in the Republic of India. It may be noted that most of the Bhatias are found in the states surrounding Rajasthan, in Kutch/Sindh in the West, Punjab in the North, and Madhya Pradesh in the East.

Among the known varieties of Bhatias, there are Kutchi, Halai, Navgam,Pachisgaam, Thattai and Punjabi. Bhatias from Kutch are Kutchi Bhatias, those from Sindh (in present day Pakistan) are known as Sindhi Bhatias and those from Punjab are known as Punjabi Bhatias. Among Sindhi Bhatias, many are further identified with the city in which they used to live (e.g., Thattai, Hyderabadi, Nasarpuri Bhatias).

The Bhatia community is generally very dynamic and entrepreneurial[citation needed].

Bhatias are also found in large numbers in cities of Mumbai, Cochin and Kozhikode in Kerala, the Kutch district of Gujarat, Delhi and Punjab. Bhatias had also emigrated to parts of East Africa such as Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda; and from there to UK, USA, and Canada, as well as Thailand and Australia. Bhatias have also established business in Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Muscat, Oman and have made significant contribution to the trade and commerce there.
