Bible Broadcasting Network

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bible Broadcasting Network (BBN) is a listener-supported global radio network staffed mostly by fundamentalist Christians as well as evangelical Christians, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. The network was founded in 1968 by Lowell Davey (who also serves as the organization's current president) and broadcasts daily prayer times, children's programs, Bible teaching, teen programs, and family guidance programs. The station also plays traditional Christian music including vocalists, choirs, and instrumentalists. The station shuns "Signs and Wonders" preaching as well as Contemporary Christian music.

BBN's stated purpose is to simply get the Word of God's into the hearts and minds of as many people as possible using the most efficient means.

For BBN, radio is not a business; it is a ministry. They believe the programming must be warm, friendly and informative and must present the truth. The microphones of the Bible Broadcasting Network are considered sacred to many Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians. BBN indeed produces about 20% of its own programming. About 30% of the time is filled with Christ centered music. The music played makes listeners truly feel God's presence. Half the broadcast day is filled by outside ministries that buy time on many other Christian stations, but they air totally free on BBN. BBN does not sell any ad time whatsoever. They also do not get money from donations sent to the outside ministries from a BBN station's listening area. BBN is also non-denominational but they endorse church membership in a Bible Believing church. Theologically, BBN is close in belief to a Conservative Baptist church or a Bible church. They are somewhat Calvinistic, but reject the doctrine of "The Elect". They tend to endorse the King James Bible, but do not subscribe to the "King James Only" belief.

Though they reject Pentecostalism, they accept such believers as Christian brothers and sisters. Also, while very opposed to Roman Catholicism (they come close to saying that the Roman Catholic church is a cult), they nonetheless believe there are some Christians within that religion.

  • May 28, 1968: Lowell Davey unsuccessfully attempts to purchase a radio station in Norfolk, Virginia.
  • March 28, 1971: Davey incorporates Bible Broadcasting Network and purchases a bankrupt radio station.
  • October 2, 1971: BBN signs on and begins transmitting at 5:00 a.m.

BBN now owns and operates over 30 full power stations and over 100 low power stations in 29 different states.

BBN is sharing the Word of God around the world 24/7 via streaming on the internet in several languages. (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, and Russian) They also operate AM and FM radio stations in 14 countries of North and South America. It is estimated that these stations reach over 200 million people.

  • BBN does not sell airtime and is fully listener supported.
  • A fund raising campaign called 'Shareathon' is run annually to finance the station.
  • BBN is staffed by only Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians.
  • The station's theme song is played every morning at 5:57 AM - "To God Be The Glory, Great Things He Has Done."
