Bill (played by David Carradine) is the character for whom the movie Kill Bill is named and was the leader of The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, which included Bill's brother, Budd. Bill's codename is "Snake Charmer". His origins and full name are not known. He collected father figures, the first of them a pimp named Esteban Vihaio. At some point he became the student of legendary swordsmith Hattori Hanzo and kung fu master Pai Mei.

Deeply saddened by the apparent murder of one of his assassins (and his lover) Beatrix "Black Mamba" Kiddo, aka "The Bride" (played by Uma Thurman), Bill personally seeks out her killers only to find that she is still very much alive, trying to clear her past, and to start a new life with her unborn child.

Bill surfaces unannounced at Kiddo's wedding rehearsal and promises not to interfere with her new life. When Bill meets Kiddo's soon-to-be-husband, Kiddo covers for him by saying he is her father (which he is, in a way).

Bill wishes Kiddo the best of luck as he moves to the Bride's side of the wedding chapel. At the same time, the remainder of his assassin squad moves in from outside and massacres the entire wedding party. Bill delivers a final speech to Kiddo, after which he shoots her in the head. Before he fires, Kiddo tells him that he is the father of her unborn child.

Kiddo miraculously survives the ordeal but falls into a coma for four years. When she awakens, she assumes that her baby died because of her traumatic ordeal. Kiddo then proceeds to hunt down and kill the remaining assassins of The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, one of whom is Bill's younger brother, Budd.

In a final confrontation at the end of Vol. 2, Kiddo storms in on Bill expecting to find him alone, but standing beside Bill is her daughter, now four years old, pretending to shoot her with a plastic gun. In a move that surprises Beatrix, Bill has already told the girl, BB, that Beatrix is her mother. Surprising her even further, Bill then tells BB honestly and bluntly that he shot and tried to kill "Mommy." BB does not seem fazed by this revelation, apparently just happy that the mother she's heard so much about is finally with her, and asks Beatrix to watch a movie with her until she falls asleep. After BB nods off to sleep, Bill and Kiddo settle their grievances and decide to conclude their "unfinished business." In the short final battle, Kiddo fatally strikes Bill by using the Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.

Bill vs. The Bride
Bill vs. The Bride

Momentarily, the Bride is horrified by the awfulness of her triumph, as she murdered the father of her child and love of her life. Yet with gentlemanly dignity, Bill tenderly holds her hand one last time, and returns her still-present love for him. As Bill gracefully walks to his death with her weeping silently for him, the two warriors forgive each other and Bill tells her that she is in fact a good person.

Having liberated her daughter from a murderous father, the Bride then takes BB into the night to begin a new life.

Bill, despite his age, is a master swordsman and martial artist. As demonstrated in the final battle between himself and Beatrix, he is also very cunning and has lightning fast reflexes. He also carries a Colt Single Action Army revolver, a firearm preferred by shooters in the old west, and in conjunction with his Lee Van Cleef manner of holstering his weapon, enhances the Cowboy aspect of Bill. He is also skillful in chemistry, which is shown in the second volume when he shoots Beatrix with an extremely potent truth serum he designed himself.

  • Bill's codename isn't mentioned until the ending credits of Vol.2.
